Causeway cleanup update & CH Navy description

Message from Sam Colville about last Saturday's CH Navy Causeway cleanup:

"We had a terrific turnout this morning. Thanks to Cumberland Harbour Navy members Rita & Bill Bruce, Susan & Joe Gregory, John Means, Joyce & Andy Kirkman, Denise & Steve Obee, Cathy & Micky Bright, Rick Lundgren, Doug Edelen, Loree Scherck, Sandy & Jack Halsey and me, 18 in all, together with a good turnout of the members of Point Peter Partners, we picked up and bagged trash from the entire North River Causeway. In addition, the PPP group cleaned up their part of New Point Peter Road.

By my count, both groups collected 26 bags of trash from the Causeway, I do not know how many by each group and doubt that anyone cares, I also do not know how many additional bags were left along New Point Peter Road but imagine Tom Canning's report will tell you. Attached is the report I have mailed to Georgia DOT Adopt-A-Highway Program."

Description of the "Cumberland Harbour Navy," contributed by Bill Bruce:

The Cumberland Harbour Navy is an informal organization of Cumberland Harbour residents, lot owners, and friends, formed originally to facilitate boating trips on the nearby waterways. The Navy does not take itself too seriously, and there is no formality - no dues, no business meetings, no uniforms, no secret handshake, etc. Although the Navy is all men, the wives form the Cumberland Harbour Navy Auxiliary and participate fully in the Navy’s activities. The Navy has evolved into both a service organization and a means for its members to enjoy each other’s company together with the beauty and opportunity of the St. Marys River area.

Now, a principal activity of the Navy is a quarterly trash pick-up on North River Causeway, coordinated by Sam Colville, which is going into its third year (the Navy has "adopted" portions of North River Causeway under the Adopt-a-Highway program of the City of St. Marys). Other service projects include participation in the annual St. Marys River cleanup and an annual Charity Smokeoff benefiting local aid organization Missions For Camden; both events are quarterbacked by Brian Timberlake. The Navy strives to be environmentally sensitive, and even worked toward the rehabilitation of an injured red tailed hawk rescued within Cumberland Harbour. The service motto of the Navy is, “How can we leave it better than we found it?”

On the fun side, and in addition to boating excursions, the Cumberland Harbour Navy has group bicycle rides (Jack Halsey), an annual Labor Day Crab Tournament (Brian), occasional poker in Brian’s garage, and consumption of judicious amounts of whisky. The Navy’s fellowship motto is, “This is what it’s all about!”
