CH Navy Causeway Cleanup this Saturday

Volunteers from Cumberland Harbour will team up with neighbors from several Point Peter neighborhoods to pick up litter on the New River Causeway, Saturday, Dec. 1, at 9:00 a.m.

Cumberland Harbour "Navy" volunteers will meet at at 9:00 in the CH real estate sales office parking lot.  We will then meet up with volunteers from the Point Peter Partners group at the intersection of New Point Peter Road and North River Causeway.

Trash bags and water will be provided.  It is recommended that you wear a light/bright colored shirt (Sam Colville has some safety vests, but probably not enough for everyone) and also a hat, gloves and rubber boots (in addition to normal attire), and bring a pick-up stick, grabber or like device.  You may also bring sun block and bug spray, if you wish, though they may not be necessary for this outing.

The forecast for this Saturday is great, with only a 10% chance of rain at this point.  Should we have a rain out, however, we will reschedule for the following Saturday, Dec. 8th.

November Art Exhibit & Nov. 8th Artist Reception

Savannah College of Art and Design ("SCAD") professor and Cumberland Harbour resident Dawn Peterson, will be joining SCAD professors Jason Zimmer and Sherran Deems in a joint exhibit of their work at the Okefenokee Heritage Center in Waycross, GA from November 1-30. 

An artist reception will be held Thursday, November 8 at 5:30pm; light refreshments will be provided. There will be a demonstration and an opportunity for those attending the reception to experience drawing with silver and copper. The website for the center is http://okefenokeeheritagecenter.com

Dawn and her husband, Ed Freeman, reside in Cumberland Harbour.

St. Marys 40th Annual Rock Shrimp Festival

The 40th Annual Rock Shrimp Festival will be held this coming Saturday, Oct. 6, in downtown St. Marys, GA.  There will be fun activities, live entertainment and food from 9:00am until 6:00pm.  Special events include a Parade and 5K & 10K races.

5K and 10K
5K and 10K races will start at 7:30 AM.  The 10K starting line will be at the corner of St. Marys St. and Ready St.  The 5K will start on Ready St. closer to where it crosses Weed Ave. See the attached form for application to enter the races, map of route, parking locations, and other information, click on: Rock Shrimp 5K and 10K information & sign-up.

The Rock Shrimp Festival Parade will start at 10:00am.  Don't miss it! Those wanting to march in the parade, line-up starts at 8:00am. If you plan to march and want to be announced from the Reviewing stand, see the form at the bottom of the Parade Flyer.

Bill Bruce @ the Causeway Cleanup

Cumberland Harbour residents volunteered recently for two service projects.  Sept. 15th saw volunteers under the whimsical banner "Cumberland Harbour Navy" clean up litter along the North River Causeway with our neighbors and friends next door, the Point Peter Partners.  The "CH Navy" and Point Peter Partners can be credited for keeping the causeway beautiful and litter-free.  Thanks you, folks.

Then on Sept. 22, a number of CH folks joined with other St. Marys residents to paint the wooden picket fence at historic Orange Hall, in downtown St. Marys.  That project, organized by our own Peni Colville, was a great success...and many reported it was fun, to boot.  Due to the large numbers of volunteers, the fence was largely finished by midday.

New Construction at Cumberland Harbour

Construction at Cumberland Harbour is ongoing.  Two houses are currently being built, including the house shown below.  The Design Review Board's architectural guidelines are being made available online through developer Atlantic Development Group's new website:

CRAB TOURNEY & FEAST A HIT!

The 1st Annual Cumberland Harbour Crab Tournament & Feast, held Sat., Aug. 18, was a huge Hit!  Six ‘Crabbing’ Teams competed Saturday afternoon to see who could catch the biggest, the best, and the ugliest crabs.  Sat. evening was the 'Judges Table’ and the Crab Feast.  Prizes were given for the Heaviest 12 Crabs; Heaviest Single Crab; and Ugliest Crab. 

 

‘Blue Crab Juggernaut‘ consisting of Bill Bruce, Andy & Joyce Kirkman and Steve Obee, won for the Heaviest 12 Crabs (7 lb., 8 oz.).  ‘I Got Crabs’ consisting of the Sam Lindsey crew won prizes for Heaviest Single Crab (1 lb.) and Ugliest Crab. Other teams competing were:  Crab Busters, Crab Daddies, Ace Queen Crab, and Miss Behavin’.

 

The Tournament is the brainchild of and was organized by Brian and Katherine Timberlake.  They spent hours organizing, meeting with crab teams and putting everything together.  Katherine hand made beautiful ceramic Crab Tourney drink coasters as door prizes (see photo).  Everyone pitched in that night with food for the Feast, and it was a great time!

 

Next year, Tournament organizers are looking to add more teams and more activities to the fun. Look for announcements in the weeks running up to Labor Day of 2013. Happy Crabbing!!

Cumberland Harbour Navy Crab Tournament

The 1st Annual Cumberland Harbour Navy Crab Tournament will be held Saturday, Aug. 18.  Mark your calendars and save the date!

Event Timeline: Crab Lines In@1PM, Lines Out@5PM, Judge’s Table@6:30PM, Crab Feast@7PM

We will have a low tide - optimal for crabbing - at 3:58 PM on Saturday, August 18th (@Beach Creek Entrance).  Crabbing will be done in the small rivers and creeks in and around Saint Marys.

The Judges Table and Crab Feast will be held at the CH Pool.  Door prizes will be awarded for the ‘Biggest Crab’ and the ‘Ugliest Crab.’  The prize of envy will consist of a ‘Badge of Distinction’ for the Captain and crew of the vessel bringing in the ‘Heaviest 12’. These badges can be prominently worn at CH Events for the entire year and will be handed down to next year’s winners.

Entry Fee: $10/a person at the door for the crab feast.  Non-Crabbers are welcome to join us for the feast. The entry fee will go towards costs involved with the crab boil and purchase of prizes. It is recommended each family or couple bring a cracker or mallet and a butter knife to the Crab Feast.

Cumberland Harbour Holiday Decorations
Members of the CH Landscape Committee gave the community a festive air by putting up Christmas and Holiday decorations on Sat., Dec. 3.  Thank you to Landscape Committee members Dianne Lindsey, Peni Colville, Joyce Kirkman, and Cindy Means, and their spouses, who worked Saturday to get the decorations put up.
