Two CH owners honored as volunteer leaders

CH resident Peni Colville and CH owner Charlie Smith were both recently honored in the Tribune & Georgian newspaper supplement "Tributaries," for their outstanding volunteer contributions to the community.

Peni Colville on the right, with Sandy Halsey.
Peni, a retired nurse, moved to Cumberland Harbour 3 years ago with her husband Sam, who practiced 1st Amendment law in Kansas City, MO.  Peni, as mentioned in the Tributaries article, is involved in volunteering locally in many different ways.  Her volunteer work includes duties at the hospital, delivering altar flowers to local senior centers, and blood pressure checks at King of Peace Episcopal Church.
Charlie Smith (center), with Brian Timberlake & Joe Gregory.

Charlie, a financial advisor and Cumberland Harbour lot owner lives in St. Marys with his wife Mary. Together, they run a financial services/insurance agency. (Mary handles the insurance side of the business.) Charlie, current Vice Chair of the Camden County Chamber of Commerce, is involved in many other local boards and organizations. Charlie indicates he feels a strong responsibility to the community to step up and contribute as challenges and opportunities arise.

Causeway cleanup update & CH Navy description

Message from Sam Colville about last Saturday's CH Navy Causeway cleanup:

"We had a terrific turnout this morning. Thanks to Cumberland Harbour Navy members Rita & Bill Bruce, Susan & Joe Gregory, John Means, Joyce & Andy Kirkman, Denise & Steve Obee, Cathy & Micky Bright, Rick Lundgren, Doug Edelen, Loree Scherck, Sandy & Jack Halsey and me, 18 in all, together with a good turnout of the members of Point Peter Partners, we picked up and bagged trash from the entire North River Causeway. In addition, the PPP group cleaned up their part of New Point Peter Road.

By my count, both groups collected 26 bags of trash from the Causeway, I do not know how many by each group and doubt that anyone cares, I also do not know how many additional bags were left along New Point Peter Road but imagine Tom Canning's report will tell you. Attached is the report I have mailed to Georgia DOT Adopt-A-Highway Program."

Description of the "Cumberland Harbour Navy," contributed by Bill Bruce:

The Cumberland Harbour Navy is an informal organization of Cumberland Harbour residents, lot owners, and friends, formed originally to facilitate boating trips on the nearby waterways. The Navy does not take itself too seriously, and there is no formality - no dues, no business meetings, no uniforms, no secret handshake, etc. Although the Navy is all men, the wives form the Cumberland Harbour Navy Auxiliary and participate fully in the Navy’s activities. The Navy has evolved into both a service organization and a means for its members to enjoy each other’s company together with the beauty and opportunity of the St. Marys River area.

Now, a principal activity of the Navy is a quarterly trash pick-up on North River Causeway, coordinated by Sam Colville, which is going into its third year (the Navy has "adopted" portions of North River Causeway under the Adopt-a-Highway program of the City of St. Marys). Other service projects include participation in the annual St. Marys River cleanup and an annual Charity Smokeoff benefiting local aid organization Missions For Camden; both events are quarterbacked by Brian Timberlake. The Navy strives to be environmentally sensitive, and even worked toward the rehabilitation of an injured red tailed hawk rescued within Cumberland Harbour. The service motto of the Navy is, “How can we leave it better than we found it?”

On the fun side, and in addition to boating excursions, the Cumberland Harbour Navy has group bicycle rides (Jack Halsey), an annual Labor Day Crab Tournament (Brian), occasional poker in Brian’s garage, and consumption of judicious amounts of whisky. The Navy’s fellowship motto is, “This is what it’s all about!”

CH Navy Causeway Cleanup this Saturday

Causeway cleanup group, Nov., 2010
Volunteers from Cumberland Harbour will team up with neighbors from several Point Peter neighborhoods to pick up litter on the New River Causeway, Saturday, Dec. 1, at 9:00 a.m.

Cumberland Harbour "Navy" volunteers will meet at at 9:00 in the CH real estate sales office parking lot.  We will then meet up with volunteers from the Point Peter Partners group at the intersection of New Point Peter Road and North River Causeway.

Trash bags and water will be provided.  It is recommended that you wear a light/bright colored shirt (Sam Colville has some safety vests, but probably not enough for everyone) and also a hat, gloves and rubber boots (in addition to normal attire), and bring a pick-up stick, grabber or like device.  You may also bring sun block and bug spray, if you wish, though they may not be necessary for this outing.

The forecast for this Saturday is great, with only a 10% chance of rain at this point.  Should we have a rain out, however, we will reschedule for the following Saturday, Dec. 8th.

Contact Sam Collville if you would like to participate, or with any questions:  scolville@tds.net

CH volunteers help in 2 projects

Bill Bruce @ the Causeway Cleanup
Cumberland Harbour residents volunteered recently for two service projects.  Sept. 15th saw volunteers under the whimsical banner "Cumberland Harbour Navy" clean up litter along the North River Causeway with our neighbors and friends next door, the Point Peter Partners.  The "CH Navy" and Point Peter Partners can be credited for keeping the causeway beautiful and litter-free.  Thanks you, folks.

Then on Sept. 22, a number of CH folks joined with other St. Marys residents to paint the wooden picket fence at historic Orange Hall, in downtown St. Marys.  That project, organized by our own Peni Colville, was a great success...and many reported it was fun, to boot.  Due to the large numbers of volunteers, the fence was largely finished by midday.

New construction at Cumberland Harbour

Great Capes Builders, LLC, is building this home for the Ownby family on Wards Lane. Dennis and Helen Ownby, working with their builder and architect, went to great lengths to save as many of the wonderful live oak trees on their property as possible. A geothermal heating & cooling system is also planned for the home.

Correction: Harbour Lights previously indicated the Scherck home had the first geothermal system in CH. Actually, the Saare home had the first system, an open-loop one, which is also considered geothermal. The soon to be completed Scherck home and the Ownby home will have closed-loop geothermal systems. Congratulations to all three families for incorporating this new technology into their homes. -Editor

We note with sorrow the recent death of our neighbor Clem Sansone. Clem and Jeanne's house on Plank Lane was one of the first built in Cumberland Harbour. The following obituary appeared in the November 5th edition of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution:

SANSONE, Clement -- Mr. Clement A. Sansone, age 56, of Decatur died Sunday, November 2, 2008. He attended Piedmont College before transferring to the University of Georgia, where he graduated with a BS in psychology. In 1974 he married Jeanne Davis. He first worked for Scottish Rite, then at the Atlanta Outpatient Surgery Center where he became director, and then as the CEO of the Northlake Surgery Center until he retired in 2007. Mr. Sansone is survived by his wife, Jeanne Sansone; sons, Brian and John Sansone; parents Clement & Norma Sansone; sister, Gilda DiPasquale; nephew, Kristoffer DiPasquale; sister-in-law, Susan Bennett and her husband David; and nephew, Davis Bennett. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, November 6, at 10:00 am at the First Baptist Church of Decatur, with Julie Pennington-Russell officiating. Interment will be at Decatur Cemetery. Those desiring may send contributions to the American Cancer Society or to the National Kidney Foundation. The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 pm Wednesday evening at A. S. Turner & Sons.
